Je t'adore, mon cher Gilles!

Edna:  It's February again, and this time of year has me thinking of valentines and keeping warm in the cold weather with a nice, handsome man.  So, here's a little valentine for my favorite handsome man, mon cher Gilles:

Edna:  Je t'adore, mon petit chou!  Come pay me a visit some time and we'll take a spin around the dance floor down at Bailey's Tavern.

Some of our "new" favorite blogs

Photobucket

Edna: You know, I'm a big fan of bloggers. Being one myself, I know how hard it is to constantly come up with new and interesting content. It's also hard to find new and interesting blogs, but thank goodness there's no end to the creative and talented people out there in the Interwebs.

Here's one of my new favorites: No Pattern Required. I love the concept, it's all about "mid-century" and "vintage/retro." Now, in my day the kind of things she talks about were called "futuristic" and "space age" but I'll let the young lady have her fun. One of my favorite recent posts was where she picked a recipe from an old cookbook and tried it out on her husband. I gather she does this quite a bit, but this one was just hilarious, especially her husband's reaction after his first bite. Dear, you are a much braver cook than I am.

Margie, do you have a new favorite blog you want to talk about?

Margie: You just hold your horses, sister. First, you're not a real blogger because you're boring. I'm the one who finds the interesting content. Secondly, I have no doubt she's a braver cook than you and I expect she doesn't burn everything either.

Yes, I do have a blog I like. It's called Vixen Vintage. The fashions and the pictures remind me of my own vixen days. I was quite the fun lady as you well know. The gentlemen found me to be most enticing.

Edna: Oh, and I think we ALL know what "fun lady" is a euphemism for, you floozy. I will leave you your delusions about the reasons for your popularity since they keep you occupied and out of my hair for the most part.

I like that Vixen Vintage blog, too. You have to admire a modern girl who loves all things vintage. People had so much more style in the old days, and things were obviously much better constructed back then since they're still around. Today's junk breaks or rips as soon as you use it once.

I guess we're on a vintage kick, since another of my new favorite blogs is The Archive Digger. It's actually a nice mix of old and "new" news, if you will. Which I guess is a theme with our blogs today: modern folks with one foot in the past.

Margie: Well, that's better than having one foot in the grave, sister. People can look at us and see how well constructed we are for sure.

Edna: Hmm. I think "well constructed" is yet another euphemism for something, but I agree that the good things seem to stand the test of time.

All Dressed Up

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, look at these pictures I found of us when we were girls. Lawsy me, did Mama think we were twins? Remember how we hated it when she dressed us alike? That old material always made us itch too.

I remember that day when you told her you didn't want to dress like me. Daddy gave you the Evil Eye and that always shut your mouth. I miss Daddy.

Edna: Daddy may have given me the Evil Eye but Mama understood. She said she dressed us alike because of her cousin back East who imported clothing and would send her the children-sized dress samples for us girls. She told me that it was a sin to waste anything, even clothes we didn't like. And that we should be thankful we had nice clothes, because so many children had to do without.

It figures you wouldn't remember that part, the part where Mama reminded us to be humble.

Margie: Edna, why do you always try to make me feel bad? I was thankful for everything except you. You wouldn't know humble if it slapped you upside your ugly head.

Edna: Get away from me Margie, don't you dare slap me! I'm not so old yet that I can't take you in a fight. I swan, it's just like you to take a reasonable conversation and resort to violence. Looks like you didn't inherit Mama's peaceful side, either.

Margie: I'll slap you with this wet noodle any time I please then I'll pull that tacky wig off your flat head.

I'm going to Bailey's. You make my nerves knot up!

The Tootsie Pops

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, I was having a piece of hard candy today and it reminded me of Daddy. Remember when we were girls and we'd wait for him to come home from work? He'd give us each a piece of hard candy. I loved peppermint.

Mama always had to scold you because you tried to eat your candy before dinner. I can hear Mama saying, " Edna, candy is to be eaten after your dinner." Glutton.

Edna: Margie, why must you take a nice memory and turn it into a chance to insult me? Not only that, but you're a big fat liar! Mama never said that to me, she said that to you.

I always loved horehound candy, I wish they'd start carrying that again down at the general store.

Margie: Edna, why do I bother trying to be nice to you? You're delusional and you never recall anything bad you did.

Here's some good news, sister. Go get your credit card because I've found a website that sells candy from our young days. I'd like to have some of these candy cigarettes. Mama hated those.

Edna: If you think I'm buying you any candy after you were so mean and hateful you're nuts, sister. And Mama didn't like those candy cigarettes because she thought they were low-class. It just figures you'd like those.

I always liked Tootsie Pops, I wonder if that website has those? You know, I had a boyfriend once who called me "Tootsie Pop."

Margie: Edna, forget it. You just made me want to barf. I don't have an appetite for candy after that Tootsie Pop remark. Gag.

Old Sears Catalog

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, come look what Cousin T bought us at the flea market. He found an old Sears catalog. This sure brings back a lot of memories. Remember all the uses Mama could find for a Sears catalog?

Edna: My lands, I sure do. Mama sure was resourceful, wasn't she? I remember how she used to wrap Christmas presents in the pages when times were tight.

Margie: She sure did and she'd use some pages to start the morning fire. Mama always wanted the house to be warm when we got out of bed.

It sure wasn't fun using those pages in the outhouse though. My behind was always... never mind.

Edna: You always give our readers too much information, Margie.

Margie: Lawsy me, Edna. Look here. Remember when we ordered these pretty slips? They don't make them like this anymore. Look at that price!

Edna: I know, and those slips lasted for years, didn't they? Longer than some of your marriages, anyway.

Margie: Dear readers, I'm not talking to this moron. I want to say to you all that I have fond memories of the Sears catalog and the main reason is because I cut the models out and made paperdolls. I hope you all have happy memories like this.

Edna: I bet they do. You know Margie, I'm an old woman, you need to get to the point faster next time.
