Thanksgiving Recipes

Margie: Edna, I was just sitting here thinking about Mama and Thanksgiving dinner. I wish I had a plate full of her good food right now. What a fine cook she was. Remember when she made Apple Dapple cake? I bet our readers will like this recipe.

Edna: Mama really was a good cook, and the house always filled up with such wonderful smells at the holidays. She used to shoo you out of the kitchen because you kept snitching food while she was trying to cook, remember?

Margie: I do remember. Do you remember how I'd beg Mama to cut the cake before Thanksgiving and she never would? I cut a piece once and ate it without anybody noticing. Mama was so mad when she found a piece gone but I told her you did it.

Edna: That doesn't surprise me one bit, you were a sneaky little so-and-so. You haven't changed much, actually.

Another thing that hasn't changed in all these years is what a picky eater you are this time of year. Heaven forbid I make anything for us with sweet potatoes, squash or pumpkin in it! You yell down the house and I never hear the end of of it. Well, this year I'm making this Pumpkin Roll Cake, and if I hear one squawk out of you I'm throwing away all your movie magazines. You hear me??

Margie: That looks delicious, sister.

Jack-o-Lantern Recycling

Edna: Margie, I know you're a big believer in being helpful and teaching new things to our readers, so I think you're going to like today's blog post. I'm sure most of our readers have left-over jack-o-lanterns just sitting around, and they must be wondering what to do with them. What do you say we give them a few suggestions?

Margie: Edna, you know me so well. I think that's a wonderful idea. There are many ways to recycle those pumpkins. One way is to beat it up with a hammer and use it as a facial mask. Not only does it soften your skin but all that good fiber goes straight to...

Well, what's your idea?

Edna: Margie, that's excellent! I think since recycling is so popular right now, everyone will surely want to hear what we have to say about this.

I was thinking that since the pumpkins are already hollowed out, why not use them as receptacles for things? You could fill them with bird seed and hang them in the trees for all the little birdies. Or, for the do-it-yourselfers, I think they'd make handy storage containers for loose screws and nails. Well, as long as you plug up the eyes and mouth....

Margie: Edna, that's fantastic! The birds would surely love that.

Cousin T usually makes me a nice cap and handbag out of his pumpkin. They work well until they start to rot then I get some odd looks from folks.

Edna, I wonder if we could freeze a pumpkin for next year? We do have to be frugal.

Edna: I suppose we could, but I don't know what it would look like next year when it thaws.

Margie, do you have a picture of yourself in your pumpkin cap and handbag? I'm sure our readers would love to see it.

Margie: Edna, you know I do. This is from last year when I also had the cute dress. Actually, I gave away autographed copies of this picture for Halloween.

Edna: Sounds good Margie. I've already got an idea for a charming set of ribcage windchimes...

Pumpkin Central

Margie: Edna, Halloween is fast approaching although the cold weather is already here. I keep having memories of how the kitchen smelled around Halloween when Mama would be baking. I found one of her old recipes for Spicy Pumpkin Cookies. Remember those?

Edna: Of course I do, I'm not daft! You know, I love this time of year. The good smells that come from all the baking, and it's always warm and toasty from the wood stove.

Mama's pumpkin cookies were fantastic, everyone wanted the recipe. I can almost smell them now.... Margie, why don't you whip us up a batch or two. You're not doing anything, you're just sitting there jawing away at me.

Margie: The only thing I'm going to whip is the side of your head. You've lost your mind if you think I'm baking you anything.

Here's what I need to make after dealing with you every day. Pumpkin Rum Mousse. I'd best triple the rum though.

Edna: Now, you know good and well that we haven't had rum in the house since you made that eggnog pie last Christmas, when you drank all the rum and went and flashed the neighbors during their dinner party. I think you'd best use rum extract for that recipe, sister.

Margie: And I think I may extract a few of your teeth to shush you up, sister. Dingbat!

Answers- Part 1

Margie: Edna and I thank all of you who recently participated in asking us questions. We will be posting our answers today and tomorrow.

We had a lot of fun answering all of these. We tried to be as honest as we could.

Do either of you have a favorite dessert? If so, may we have the recipe?

Margie: My favorite dessert is one my grandmother made. She had learned the recipe from her mother and taught it to me. It's called a Butter Roll and I don't go by a recipe because I just make it like my grandma did. Some people use milk but I much prefer making it with water.

Here are a few recipes for you to check then you can pick the one that suits you best.

Edna: My favorite dessert is one I make every Thanksgiving, it's a delicious sweet potato pie. Some people say it tastes just like a pumpkin pie, but I think mine is far tastier. This is a good recipe, and I usually like to doctor it up with a little bit of ground cloves and a pinch of ginger. For a richer pie, you can substitute light cream for the evaporated milk.


2. From Patricia:

I would so like to know more about the two of you. Have either of you been married? If not, I'm assuming you both have broken at least a few hearts in your day. Are there any stories you could tell?

Edna: Oh honey, I've got plenty of stories, but none that I should tell. I will tell you that I have been married two times, and have broken many more hearts than that. Does that answer your question, dear?

Margie: I've got plenty of stories I could tell about Edna too! Can you say stalker? As for me, I've only been married once. I prefer to play the field.

It seems like you've both had very interesting lives. Do you ever get bored? And, if so, what do you do to shake things up?

Margie: I never get bored because I always have books on hand and I do love to read. When I take a break from reading I like to push Edna's buttons and watch her go ballistic. She's a riot!

Why is it so easy for people to bring themselves to hate others? Has there ever been a time when hatred has solved a societal ill?

Edna: Dear, I think it's because there are so many people who hate themselves, so they just push that hate out on to others. It's a crying shame, but there it is. And I do not believe that hatred has ever solved any societal ill, it just makes them worse. Sadly, love seems to be a harder lesson to teach folks than hate.
