National Fritters Day

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, this is National Fritters Day and that reminds me of Mama's apple fritters. I can smell them now. I wish I had a plate full of them and I'd eat every one.

Remember how you and I would fight over who got the most fritters? I can still hear Mama saying, "Ladies do not fight." Guess you never listened, huh?

Edna: As usual, Margie, you are misremembering. The way I recall, you would eat all the fritters before I got to the table, then you'd pinch me until I cried to make Mama think we were fighting. What you didn't know is that she always saved me a plate in the pantry. Guess you got out-smarted, sister.

Thanksgiving Recipes

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, I was just sitting here thinking about Mama and Thanksgiving dinner. I wish I had a plate full of her good food right now. What a fine cook she was. Remember when she made Apple Dapple cake? I bet our readers will like this recipe.

Edna: Mama really was a good cook, and the house always filled up with such wonderful smells at the holidays. She used to shoo you out of the kitchen because you kept snitching food while she was trying to cook, remember?

Margie: I do remember. Do you remember how I'd beg Mama to cut the cake before Thanksgiving and she never would? I cut a piece once and ate it without anybody noticing. Mama was so mad when she found a piece gone but I told her you did it.

Edna: That doesn't surprise me one bit, you were a sneaky little so-and-so. You haven't changed much, actually.

Another thing that hasn't changed in all these years is what a picky eater you are this time of year. Heaven forbid I make anything for us with sweet potatoes, squash or pumpkin in it! You yell down the house and I never hear the end of of it. Well, this year I'm making this Pumpkin Roll Cake, and if I hear one squawk out of you I'm throwing away all your movie magazines. You hear me??

Margie: That looks delicious, sister.

Old Farmers Day

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, today is Old Farmers Day and I always think about our grandparents who farmed. I remember those fresh vegetables from the garden. They sure tasted fine.

Remember how we'd sit under the shade tree on a hot day and eat that watermelon? Grandma would put it in the crick and it'd be so cold.

Edna: I do remember that. I also remember Mama scolding us for being unladylike after we had that seed spitting contest.

I like to see that people are having their own gardens again and are buying local produce. It all tastes so much better when it's home-grown, doesn't it?

Margie: That's the truth. Go drag out those nice apples you bought and share a few with me, stingy. I bet you got apple cider too.

Mama said it's unladylike to be a glutton and not share with others.

Edna: You know, Mama also said it's unladylike to be bossy and a bully, but that never stops you. I did get cider along with the apples when I went to the cider mill, but I was saving the cider for tonight as a surprise for you after dinner. But I guess you ruined that so go help yourself, you big baby.

Margie: I was just teasing, sister. Let's have our cider in the parlor. Cousin T stopped by and started us a fire.

All I need now is a young farmer and I'll be all set.

Edna: Sorry sister, they weren't selling any of those at the cider mill.

National Fritters Day

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, today is National Fritters Day. My goodness, that makes me think about all those fritters Mama used to make.

Remember how Mama had to make one plate of fritters just for Daddy? He sure could put away a load of those things.

Edna: You could too, as I recall. Still can, you glutton. I suppose I shouldn't point fingers, I do enjoy a crispy apple fritter with my morning tea from time to time. We should make more fritters, why don't we?

Margie: Good question, Edna. I don't make them very often because I can never decide what kind to make. I do love apple fritters but I love corn fritters too.

Talking about fritters has made me hungry. Maybe I should go make some of both kinds?

Edna: Sounds like a good idea, sister. But you'd better get your welding mask out of the garage, you know how that oil spatters. I'll give Cousin T a call and have him bring over a fire extinguisher.

Margie: Make that two, Edna.
