Retro Fashionistas

Margie: Edna, look at this picture I found of Greta Garbo. Wasn't she beautiful? Garbo and the other ladies of that era sure knew fashion. I wish we still dressed like this.

It's ridiculous how tacky the ladies' fashions are today. They let everything hang out. You know what Mama would say about that, don't you?

Edna: I surely do, she'd say that it's better to leave something to the imagination than to show all your goods in the shop window.

I agree with you about the old-fashioned clothing, the ladies sure had grace and panache back then. I had a beau who used to tell me I reminded him of Betty Grable, but I always wished I were tall and graceful like Ginger Rogers. Now there was a dame with style!

Margie: Mama was right! I always say the same thing. You best sit down, Edna, for when I say this.

You were the best seamstress I ever saw. Remember how we'd go to the movies and see a dress we liked? We'd buy the material and you'd make us the dress even though you'd only seen it once and had no pattern.

Edna: Why Margie, what a sweet thing for you to say! Maybe I'd best check to see if you have a fever, you're not feeling delirious or anything are you?

You are right about my sewing, I used to be able to whip up a fashionable outfit in no time flat. I wish my arthritis didn't slow me down these days, I could be bringing in a pretty penny on the side making couture knock-offs.

Maybe I could teach Cousin T how to sew?

Margie: Call him, Edna, because I'd love to have a new dress.

Definitely too much skin these days ladies. You could probably cover more with dental floss and a hairpin than what's covered by today's wardrobe

I can see it now! Miss Edna teaches me all she knows and I get a little ruanway project of my own going on. I’ll smoke cigarettes with one of them long tips and call everyone Dahling. Has anybody seen my monocle?

How Serendipitous this post is! I have always loved the styles from the 30's, 40's and 50's, and have recently decided to learn how to sew so that I can have clothing just like some of those styles. I am sick of the tacky, low quality clothing that sells in stores for handfuls of money. I found a pattern place online (it is clubBMV.com, I hope I'm allowed to say) that sells great Vintage patterns that have been redone for today's fabrics from companies like Vogue, McCall's and Butterick. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I absolutely wish the fashion sense of Garbo and Astaire would make a huge comeback today. What class and thoughtful appreciation of how one looked back then. Great pics of a bygone era.

You are so right. Those were the glamour days. Now the fashion sense is more skin and less thread. It leaves nothing to the imagination and not just in women. How many times do we see guys with those tacky baggy pants with their underwear and "crack" showing. I don't wanna see that.

Even when I was younger and my Mom and I would go downtown, I would have to wear and dress with gloves. Now, nobody cares how they dress anymore. It's just a matter of respect for yourself and others.

Okay girls, now that I've vented it's back to filming the Margiedales, speaking of clothing :D

Aww, I love the fashions from the old days. Sometimes I watch old movies just for that. Though honestly I wouldn't want to go back to having to wear stockings every day, LOL. But I agree, today's fashions just show too much, and they're advertising the wrong message not only to men, but to younger girls. The fashion of old still allowed you to be sexy and feminine, without making you look like you're only interested in one thing.

Meghann LittleStudio, thanks for the link!
