For Edna: Cary Grant
Margie: Edna always said that Cary Grant would be her dream husband. Well, she sure wouldn't have been his dream wife! Anyway, I'm posting this for all you Cary Grant fans.

Goodbye David Nelson
Margie: I never missed an episode of "Ozzie and Harriet." There was a good family show and those two handsome boys- Ricky and David. Well, they're all gone now. David passed away on January 12. They sure gave me plenty of happy memories.
David Nelson, who co-starred with his parents and little brother Rick on the popular television show 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,' has died after battling complications of colon cancer, a family spokesman told the Associated Press. He was 74.
'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet' aired on ABC from 1952 to 1966; many of the episodes were directed by Nelson, who was the last surviving member of the TV family.

Popular Baby Names In 1945
Margie: Look at these most popular baby names from 1945. I can actually pronounce them all. Have you seen some of the unusual names people use these days? These names were fine in 1945 and I say they'll work fine now too. Let's go back to sensible names.
Got to run. Need to write President Obama about this.

The Funnies
Margie: Edna and I always did love our funnies. Daddy would get the paper first because he kept up with Dick Tracy. Daddy always said that Dick Tracy's 2 Way Wrist Watch was pure science fiction so I wonder what he'd say now if he could see a cell phone.
I liked that Flash Gordon myself. He was a manly man and I always believed he'd make a fine husband.
Mama liked Gasoline Alley. She would laugh so loud and Mama never felt that was proper in a lady. Guess she thought it was okay in her own home.
Edna loved the Katzenjammer Kids. She had a love of strange names and she loved Hans and Fritz because they rebelled against authority and she wished she could too.
What was your favorite funnie?

Magazines We Loved
Margie: Edna and I sure did love the magazines of the 1940's. I remember Daddy bringing home that Look magazine and he and Mama would sit on the couch and got through it together.
My favorite was Modern Screen because I wanted to be a movie star or marry one. My stars, I had to hide my magazine because Edna would try to get them to see if they had any Cary Grant pictures. She loved to cut his pictures out and tape them to the inside of her closet.
Edna's favorite magazine was Vogue. Edna always did fancy herself as a socialite. Nitwit. Anyway, she'd study those pictures for hours then she'd go buy material and sew her a fancy dress. Madonna never met that material girl.

1940's Slang
Margie: Slang surely has changed since mine and Edna's time. Nowadays folks use some slang words that I certainly wouldn't use even in private. Here's a look at some slang from mine and Edna's day.
Drugstore Cowboy - a guy that hangs around on a street corner trying to pick up girls. (I always did love cowboys).
Dumb Dora - a stupid female. (Too bad Edna's name wasn't Dora).
Whoopee - To have a good time. (I could tell you stories...)
GAMS-a woman's legs
Drooly- A cute guy (I'm drooling now).
Khaki wacky- Boy crazy (This would be Edna).
Hi sugar, are you rationed?- Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend? (I'd love some sugar).

January Theme
Margie: What a wonderful beginning to the New Year it is! My crazy sister, Edna, is gone on what she calls a vacation. I call it lollygagging. Mama wouldn't like such foolishness because she believed in keeping busy. She said the good Lord gave us Sunday to rest and that was all we needed.
Anyway, Edna is gone and I'm in charge of this blog and MY house so here's how it's going to be. I'm declaring this 1940's month. You heard me. Those were the happiest years of mine and Edna's lives and I want to share why with you. We'll be talking about a wide range of topics like that stinky perfume Edna wore and how she painted her face to look like a floozy. I might even play you some music. I wish I had one of those Kodak's what makes moving pictures and I'd get Cousin T to make a picture of me singing. You all would love it.
Well, I've got to go make sure everything is in place in Edna's room. She likes it when I do that. I'll be talking to you all real soon.
