Granny's Old Sayings

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, I was just thinking about Granny and those sayings she used to have. Do you remember when we'd go visit and she'd say, "I've been studying on you girls." Why did she say that instead of just saying she'd been thinking about us?

Edna: I guess it was just how she knew to say it. You know, I can't say I ever thought much about why Granny said the things she did, that's just how she talked. We knew what she meant, though, even if it wasn't always how other folks would say things.

Margie: That's sure the truth. You know what one of my favorites was, Edna? When Granny misplaced something she'd say, "I can't start that bowl."

Wonder why she didn't say she couldn't find her bowl since that's what she meant?

Edna: Good Lord, Margie, why didn't you just ask the poor woman while she was alive if you were so all-fired curious? I have no idea why she used those words, but I'm guessing it's how her family talked while she was growing up.

Margie: Lord have mercy, Edna. No wonder nobody wants to have a conversation with you. All I have to say is that Granny called people "quar" if they were odd and eccentric and I'd say you're as quar as they come!

Margie's Fun Friday

Margie: Edna is always watching that YouTube so I went there to see what's so interesting. Look what I found.

Clara, 91-year-old cook and great-grandmother discusses her childhood during the Great Depression as she prepares meals from the era. Learn how to make simple yet delicious dishes while listening to stories from the Great Depression.

I'm always in a depression living with Edna so maybe these recipes will cheer me up a bit.

National Fritters Day

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, today is National Fritters Day. My goodness, that makes me think about all those fritters Mama used to make.

Remember how Mama had to make one plate of fritters just for Daddy? He sure could put away a load of those things.

Edna: You could too, as I recall. Still can, you glutton. I suppose I shouldn't point fingers, I do enjoy a crispy apple fritter with my morning tea from time to time. We should make more fritters, why don't we?

Margie: Good question, Edna. I don't make them very often because I can never decide what kind to make. I do love apple fritters but I love corn fritters too.

Talking about fritters has made me hungry. Maybe I should go make some of both kinds?

Edna: Sounds like a good idea, sister. But you'd better get your welding mask out of the garage, you know how that oil spatters. I'll give Cousin T a call and have him bring over a fire extinguisher.

Margie: Make that two, Edna.

Margie and Edna's fast food rant

Photobucket

Margie: Edna, I am sick and tired of these fast food ads and coupons choking up our mailbox. They're just junk which ends up causing us to waste space in the garbage can.

You know that in our day the food was slow cooked at home and only some women were fast. I remember Mama telling us about fast women and how they'd come to a bad end in life.

Edna: Margie, there are so many responses I could make to that comment, but I won't because I'm a classy lady.

You're right about fast food being a big problem today. Even with coupons, eating at those restaurants isn't cheap. It's much more economical to do some good old-fashioned home cooking. But I have to admit, Margie, I'm partial to those McDonald's french fries.

Margie: I'm glad you brought that up, Edna. Some of the girls and I went to McDonald's today and I ended up with a lettuce burger. You know what that is?

It used to be called a Big Mac but the meat on that thing looked like a piece of thin sausage. Tiny. They try to fill you up on the bread and lettuce. I almost pistol whipped that manager!

Edna: These big corporations should be ashamed of themselves, what they charge for just a tiny bit of food. It's just criminal.

But Margie...I thought you got banned from McDonald's after the last incident.

Margie: Edna, can't you ever stick to the subject at hand? Give me that junk. I'm going to address envelopes. From now on I'm mailing this trash right back to them!
