Food Friday

Margie: Edna and I lived through the Depression and that wasn't always easy. Fortunately, we didn't live together then so I had a peaceful life. I just worked at the library and conducted my own business without Edna trying to boss me.

Anyway, people didn't always have a lot to eat during the Depression and today's food prices are so high that people nowadays don't always have a lot to eat either.

I thought we could all benefit from watching 91-year-old cook and great-grandmother, Clara, recount her childhood during the Great Depression as she prepares meals from the era.

That looks pretty delicious to me. And, she probably only spent about 5 bucks for that entire meal. Onions, hot dogs and potatoes are cheap and she served three guys there. So basically you could feed a family of three or four on $5.00 for dinner. That is amazing and it looks good too. I'm going to try it. Every dollar counts these days.

Edna: Folks, don't you listen to her! She's lying out of her lying mouth, as usual. We weren't but girls during the Depression, she didn't work at the library until she was a grown woman some 20 years later. Margie, if that's what you call "poetic license," I want no part of it!

I swan, if you ever try and make me 20 years older than I really am again, I'm going to put itching powder in your bloomers the next time I do laundry. See if I don't!

That depression meal reminds me of what we ate at our house when we were children and lived in the project in Phenix City, Alabama. My mother called it "poverty soup" - it consisted of onions, spam and potatoes. I actually thought it was pretty good. I tried it on my boys once, though, and they asked me not to ever make it again!!
